Sunset Road
Autumn, 2014
‘Sunset Road’ is a song that emerged during one of my many homeward drives from my office in Tauranga to my family farm in Maketu during 2014. It is my melodic ode to the auburn glory of an autumn sunset over the Papamoa Hills and the Te Puke plains. In my office at the time, I looked out at the brick wall of the office adjoining block. Work was a bit of a grind and I couldn’t even see the sky. The magic hour landscape of my city to country commute would always pick my heart up by its sagging corners and make me smile and breathe again. I hope you enjoy it!
I am happy living here in the shadow of these hills
As the sunlight casts its glow across the land.
And my feet are tired of running and my mind wants to be still
The country air dissolves my city plans.
I never want to run away again
I never want to run away again.
’Cause I love this sunset road
When I’m travelling back home.
Through the four walls of my day
I don’t know if it’s blue or grey
But then the evening is a canvas painted gold.
I love the winter mornings when the eye can see for miles
The naked trees stand sentry on the plains.
And the cattle turn to greet me and forget the frost awhile
The sunrise serenades me once again.
There’ll come a day I’ll go away again
I know someday I’ll go away again.
But I love this sunset road
And I’ll be always travelling home.
Different roads take me away
But they will bring me back someday
To these purple hills and these familiar skies.
Yes I love this sunset road
When I’m travelling back home.
Through the four walls of my day
I don’t know if it’s blue or grey
But then the evening is a canvas painted gold.
When the sun is going down, a certain magic fills the air
The golden glow ignites the auburn flame
Of the autumn trees who’ve seen more seasons that I’ll ever know
When I’m gone, they’ll face the sunrise just the same.
Yes I love this sunset road
Even though my heart may roam.
Different roads take me away
But they will bring me back someday
To these purple hills and these familiar skies.
If I’m home or far away
If I’m feeling blue or grey
I’ll always have this sunset road.
